Introduction: In 2014, the residency program adopted a new chief resident model. Multiple other programs had similar style of having all final-year residents have “chief” role. Chief are meant to be leaders in residency, direct influence on program, and serve as liaisons with department chiefs. Method: Prior three year: one Admin, Academic, Recruitment. They were chosen using vote amongst residents/faculty, ultimate decision made by leadership. Many interested, often qualified, but ultimately not chosen. all-chief model was adopted. Each PGY-3 would responsibility. The goal give each leadership opportunity, tangible product they transition fellowships or jobs. allowed pick their position, some Residents encouraged create roles which aligned personal interests career goals. Examples included Medical Director Chief, U/S chief, PEM Wellness Chief. Results: Some thrived when given responsibility, while others did not. could manage more responsibility: there clear disparity effort. At start this, residents’ total shifts/month decreased equally. This created controversy workload equal. alteration details, requirements, expectations occurred every year an attempt correct failures. Conclusion: Ultimately, failure. reverted traditional model, allowing only those felt responsibilities Those doing role additional shifts less added work partial shift reduction.
